Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Dumfries has many mature trees that provide valuable summer shade but also produce surface roots that compete aggressively with nearby plants for moisture and nutrients. Maintain a mulch ring extending at least 3 feet out from the base of each mature tree, keeping the mulch 2 to 3 inches deep and pulled back a few inches from the actual trunk flare. This protects surface roots from compaction, retains soil moisture through dry stretches, and reduces damage from mowers and string trimmers working close to the base.
