On any slope steeper than about four to one, switch from fine shredded mulch to double ground bark or three quarter inch crushed stone, both of which lock together and stay put. Set a stone or timber toe at the bottom of the bed to catch what does creep, and terrace long runs into two or three shorter benches to slow runoff.
