Nibley lawns over compacted builder soil tend to puddle and thin out. Core aerate in early September, then top dress with a quarter inch to half inch of screened compost and rake it into the holes. Overseed immediately with a Kentucky bluegrass and fescue blend. The compost feeds soil biology through fall while roots grow, and by next June the turf holds color longer between waterings.

Set the root flare an inch or two above the surrounding grade, backfill with native soil rather than pure compost, and mulch three inches wide but never against the trunk. On the wettest lots, plant on a low mound to lift roots into air.

Builder grade Nibley yards often come with narrow, poorly defined beds that swallow mulch every year. Cut a clean four inch deep spade edge or install steel edging, then widen beds to at least three feet so shrubs are not crowded against foundations. Defined edges hold mulch in place, keep bluegrass rhizomes from creeping in, and cut your annual top up volume noticeably.
Nibley has grown quickly from farmland into family neighborhoods, and much of it sits on the valley floor where silt loam holds water tightly. New yards often arrive with thin, compacted topsoil left behind by builders. A few yards of quality garden soil and compost changes what will grow there. We deliver bulk material to Nibley homes on regular schedules, including tight cul de sac lots.
