I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Poor drainage is one of the most common landscaping complaints in Olivette, particularly in yards where clay pockets sit beneath the surface silt loam layer. Adding a 4-inch base of coarse gravel beneath low-lying planting beds redirects water away from root zones before problems develop. River rock dry creek beds offer another practical solution, channeling runoff toward street drains while adding a natural visual element that looks intentional rather than remedial.

Try Our CalculatorOlivette yards with deep shade from mature hardwoods often have bare soil patches where turf cannot compete. Rather than fighting the shade, top-dress those areas with two inches of fine shredded hardwood mulch and plant shade-tolerant groundcovers like liriope or pachysandra. The mulch layer keeps the soil moist and cool, which low-light plants prefer, and it eliminates the muddy bare spots that appear after heavy spring rains in Olivette.

Raised beds are a practical solution for Olivette homeowners who want productive vegetable or herb gardens but have compacted or poorly structured native soil. Building beds eight to twelve inches high with a quality topsoil and compost blend gives roots immediate access to loose, nutrient-rich growing conditions. In Zone 5b, you can start cool-season crops in raised beds a week or two earlier in spring because the elevated soil warms faster than ground level.
Get Started with Mulch mound Today
Nestled between Clayton and Creve Coeur, Olivette is a quiet, established city where mature neighborhoods and community green spaces set the tone for daily life. Residents here value functional outdoor environments that perform well through Missouri's full range of seasons, not just look good in spring. Because many properties feature older trees and irregular grade changes, managing water flow across yards is a recurring concern for homeowners. Bulk deliveries of gravel, river rock, and topsoil from MulchMound give Olivette residents the materials to tackle drainage challenges on their own schedule.
