I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Complete Your Sylvester Outdoor Project
We’ve got you covered with our full line of landscape supply products, from premium mulch and quality soil to decorative stone, helping you create a cohesive, professional landscape that enhances your property for years to come.
Sylvester sits on sandy loam soil that drains quickly, which means planting beds can dry out faster than expected during the warm months between April and November. Work a two to three inch layer of aged compost into your beds before laying mulch to improve moisture retention at the root zone. Bulk topsoil blended with organic material gives your plants a better foundation and reduces how often you need to water during dry stretches.

Try Our CalculatorSylvester's long Zone 8b growing season gives weeds like crabgrass and dollarweed a wide window to establish in your planting beds. Laying a 3-inch layer of pine bark mulch over landscape fabric suppresses germination without relying heavily on herbicides. Refresh the mulch each spring before soil temperatures climb in late April to stay ahead of the surge Sylvester gardens typically see pushing into the summer months.

With Sylvester's last frost falling around April 26, hold off on setting out warm-season transplants until early May. Use that pre-planting window to top-dress beds with a blended compost and sandy loam mix, giving roots a nutrient boost before summer heat arrives. Ordering bulk compost lets you prep multiple beds at once, giving every transplant the best possible start in Sylvester's fast-draining soil before the hot stretch begins.
