I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Because much of Vincennes lies on Wabash floodplain soil, raise your planting beds four to six inches with a screened topsoil and compost blend before you plant anything permanent. That extra height keeps root crowns above spring saturation, which is when most shrub loss actually happens here. Crown the center of the bed slightly so water sheds toward the lawn instead of pooling around stems.

Try Our CalculatorTime your mulch refresh in Vincennes for late April, after the soil has warmed past the last frost around April 18. Mulching too early over cold, wet ground traps spring saturation and slows root activity. Pull the old layer back with a rake first, check that total depth stays near three inches, and keep everything two inches off trunks and stems so bark can breathe.

Core aerate in early September, then topdress with a quarter inch of screened compost and overseed with a turf type tall fescue blend. The 45 inches of annual rainfall does most of the watering for you, and fall seeding beats the crabgrass pressure you get in spring.
Get Started with Mulch mound Today
Vincennes sits along the Wabash River as Indiana's oldest city, and its historic neighborhoods hold a mix of century-old homes and newer subdivisions on the north side. River bottom ground here runs rich but heavy, so homeowners often need topsoil blends and coarse mulch to lift beds above soggy spots. MulchMound delivers bulk hardwood mulch, screened topsoil, and decorative stone throughout the Vincennes area by the cubic yard.
