Drip irrigation belongs under mulch in Dayton, never on top of it. Lay the emitter tubing directly on soil, then cover it with three inches of bark. The mulch shields the lines from ultraviolet damage that cracks tubing after a few brutal summers, and it keeps water at the root zone instead of evaporating off a bare surface. Fine sandy soils are common along the Dayton benches, and they drain faster than the regional clay loam profile suggests. Where you hit sand, work in two to three inches of compost to boost water holding capacity, and shorten irrigation cycles while increasing frequency. Sand needs more frequent, smaller drinks than clay. Mulch matters even more here because bare sandy ground dries out within a day.
