I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Complete Your Fredonia Outdoor Project
We’ve got you covered with our full line of landscape supply products, from premium mulch and quality soil to decorative stone, helping you create a cohesive, professional landscape that enhances your property for years to come.
Fredonia's grape country heritage left a lot of soil that tests slightly acidic, which suits hydrangeas, blueberries, and rhododendrons beautifully. Before you dump lime out of habit, pull a simple soil test from three spots in the yard. If the reading lands between 5.5 and 6.5, plant to it rather than fighting it. Amending with compost improves structure without swinging pH in either direction.

Try Our CalculatorFredonia's mature street trees make dry shade a real challenge under maples and lindens. Skip turf entirely in those zones and build a two inch mulch layer over shade tolerant groundcovers like pachysandra, epimedium, or wild ginger. Keep the mulch thin near surface roots so the tree can still breathe, and water new plantings deeply once a week through the first two summers while they compete for moisture.

Primary ZIP: 14063Edging matters more than most Fredonia homeowners expect. A clean spade cut trench four inches deep along every bed line stops creeping grass, gives mulch a place to sit, and sharpens the whole yard visually. Recut in early spring before the first mulch application. On sloped village lots, that trench also catches runoff during the heavy rain months instead of letting it wash mulch onto sidewalks.

Village life in Fredonia means older homes, mature street trees, and tidy lots where every square foot of planting bed shows. Many properties near the SUNY campus and Barker Common have decades of accumulated organic matter in the soil, which is a gift once you know how to work with it. Bulk compost, mulch, and stone arrive by the yard instead of the bag. Tight village driveways just need a clear drop spot arranged ahead of time.
