Masonry Sand

Masonry sand starts as mined or dredged sand that gets washed to strip out silt, clay, and organic matter, then screened to a tight, fine gradation. The finished product is graded to meet ASTM C144, the masonry mortar aggregate standard, which sets strict limits on particle size distribution and cleanliness. Most of the grains fall between the #30 and #100 sieve sizes, which is considerably finer than concrete sand and gives masonry sand its smooth, uniform feel underfoot and in a trowel. The rounded to sub rounded shape of the grains, rather than the sharp angular shape of concrete sand, is a direct result of natural weathering during the washing and sorting process. That roundness is what makes masonry sand workable for mortar and comfortable for play or footing use, but it also means it does not lock together as tightly as angular sand, so it is not the right choice anywhere maximum load bearing compaction is required.

For lawn leveling, mow the area short, remove debris, and spread masonry sand in thin layers no deeper than half an inch per pass, working it into the turf with a rake or the back of a lute, then water it in before adding another lift if needed. For a pool base, clear and compact the soil first, then screed 2 to 3 inches of masonry sand level using a pipe or board as a guide, and avoid over saturating it before the liner goes down. For paver joints, sweep the sand across the finished surface and vibrate or tamp it into the gaps, then repeat once the sand settles. In every case, keep the layer thin and avoid oversaturating before the material sees traffic or load, since masonry sand shifts more easily than coarser aggregate when it is piled too deep or left too wet.

Compared with concrete sand. Concrete sand is coarser and more angular, which gives it better drainage and stronger compaction, while masonry sand is fine and smooth, which is what makes it workable for mortar and precise leveling. Choose masonry sand for mortar, stucco, lawn leveling, and joint filling, and choose concrete sand for structural paver bedding or drainage heavy applications.

Compared with play sand. Standard masonry sand is clean and fine but is not certified or processed for child safety the way play sand is, and some suppliers explicitly warn against using it in a sandbox due to staining and health concerns. Use masonry sand for masonry and hardscape leveling work, and use certified play sand for children's sandboxes.

How much masonry sand do I need. A cubic yard covers roughly 300 to 325 sq ft at a 1 inch depth, about 100 sq ft at 3 inches, and much less at greater depths, so a 2 to 3 inch pool base or a paver setting bed uses noticeably more material per square foot than a thin lawn topdressing pass. To estimate, multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, and round up slightly since spreading and compaction always use a bit more than the flat math suggests.

How masonry sand is sold and delivered. Masonry sand is sold in bulk by the cubic yard or by the ton, and is typically delivered loose by dump truck for driveway or yard drop off rather than in bags, since bagged sand is impractical for anything beyond a very small job. Because coverage and pricing depend on local supply, gradation, and moisture content, always confirm exact yardage and weight with your local supplier before ordering a large volume.
