Above ground pool base

A thin, level layer of mason sand under a pool liner cushions the vinyl and smooths out lumps, roots, and small stones in the underlying soil. Keep the layer to 2 to 3 inches, since deeper beds are prone to shifting once the pool is filled with water. Screed it level with a straight board before setting the liner, and avoid walking on it once it is graded.

Lawn leveling and topdressing

Spread thin over low spots and uneven turf, mason sand fills depressions without smothering grass, especially when mixed with topsoil or compost. How mason sand is produced and graded

The finished product is graded to meet ASTM C144, the masonry mortar aggregate standard, which sets strict limits on particle size distribution and cleanliness. Most of the grains fall between the #30 and #100 sieve sizes, which is considerably finer than concrete sand and gives mason sand its smooth, uniform feel underfoot and in a trowel. The rounded to sub rounded shape of the grains, rather than the sharp angular shape of concrete sand, is a direct result of natural weathering during the washing and sorting process. That roundness is what makes mason sand workable for mortar and comfortable for play or footing use, but it also means it does not lock together as tightly as angular sand, so it is not the right choice anywhere maximum load bearing compaction is required.

Preparing a base and installing mason sand

For lawn leveling, mow the area short, remove debris, and spread mason sand in thin layers no deeper than half an inch per pass, working it into the turf with a rake or the back of a lute, then water it in before adding another lift if needed. For a pool base, clear and compact the soil first, then screed 2 to 3 inches of mason sand level using a pipe or board as a guide, and avoid over saturating it before the liner goes down. For paver joints, sweep the sand across the finished surface and vibrate or tamp it into the gaps, then repeat once the sand settles.
