What Stone Dust Is Used For

Setting bed under pavers and flagstone

Spread in 1 to 2 in lifts over a compacted gravel sub-base and screeded level, then tamped to form a firm bedding layer for pavers or flagstone. This is the most common use for stone dust and the reason most orders happen. It fills small voids under the stones so they sit flush and don't rock underfoot.

Swept into joints after laying, then lightly watered and compacted so the fines lock the units in place. It costs far less than polymeric sand and works fine for light foot traffic, though heavy rain or repeated pressure washing will wash the fines out of the joints over a few seasons.

How stone dust is produced and graded

Stone dust is the byproduct of crushing quarried rock, mainly limestone or granite, down through a series of screens. What passes the smallest screens, generally under 3/8 in and including true fines down to dust, gets collected and sold as stone dust, quarry dust, or rock dust depending on the region. It is a dense-graded product, meaning it contains a full range of particle sizes rather than one uniform grain size like sand. That range is what lets it compact into a tight, low-void mass under a plate compactor. Color and mineral content depend entirely on the parent rock at the quarry, so gray and bluish gray dominate where limestone or granite is common, with tan or reddish variants elsewhere. Because it produces airborne dust when dry, suppliers and contractors often dampen it before spreading or loading, both for handling and for a cleaner job site.

Installing stone dust as a paver setting bed

Start with a compacted crushed stone sub-base, typically 4 to 8 in deep, to handle drainage and load bearing since stone dust itself does not drain well once packed. Spread stone dust on top in a 1 to 2 in layer, screed it flat using pipe or bar guides to get a consistent depth, then set pavers directly on the screeded surface without walking on the bed first. After the pavers are placed, compact the whole surface with a plate compactor, which seats the units and beds them into the dust. Sweep dust into the joints and run the compactor again, then lightly water the joints to help settle the fines. Skipping the sub-base and relying on stone dust alone as the entire base is a common mistake in freeze-thaw climates, since it holds water and can heave when it freezes.

How It Compares

Compared with sand (mason or concrete sand). Sand grains are more uniform and rounded, so sand drains and shifts more freely but never locks together as tightly. Stone dust's mix of fines and small fragments compacts into a denser, more stable bed, which is why most paver installers reach for stone dust over sand as the setting layer, especially for heavier units like flagstone.

Compared with crushed stone or gravel. Crushed stone like 3/4 in clean stone has large angular pieces with high void space, so it drains fast and won't hold water against a structure. Stone dust is the opposite, dense-graded and low-void, which makes it compact hard but perform poorly as a drainage layer on its own.

Measure your patio or path square footage, pick your target depth, and divide. Add about 10 percent extra to cover compaction settling, since loose material shrinks 10 to 15 percent once tamped down. For paver setting beds, 1 to 2 in is standard, so most residential patios need less than a full cubic yard per 100 sq ft.

How stone dust is sold and delivered. Stone dust is sold by the cubic yard or by the ton in bulk, not bagged, since project quantities usually run from a fraction of a yard for small patios up to multiple yards for larger installs. A cubic yard weighs roughly 2,500 to 2,700 lbs, so tonnage and cubic yardage are easy to convert between when placing an order. Bulk delivery drops the material on site, typically on a driveway or staging area, ready to be moved to the work area with a wheelbarrow or small equipment.

Common Stone Dust Questions

Is stone dust the same as sand?
No. Stone dust is crushed rock screenings with a mix of fine particles and small fragments, while sand is naturally rounded and more uniform. Stone dust compacts harder but drains less freely than sand, which is why it's preferred as a paver setting bed.
Can stone dust be the only base under a paver patio?
