Raised Bed Soil
Raised bed soil is a pre-blended mix of topsoil, compost, and an aeration material like perlite, sand, or aged bark, built to fill garden beds with a loose, well-drained growing medium. It is not plain topsoil and not straight compost, it is engineered to sit in a contained bed and support root growth all season. This page is for anyone filling, topping off, or budgeting for a new or existing raised bed.
What Raised Bed Soil Is Used For
Filling a new raised bed
Standard fill depth is 8 to 12 inches for most vegetables and annuals. A 4x8 ft bed at 12 inches needs about 1.2 cubic yards, at 10 inches about 1 cubic yard. A 4x4 ft bed at 12 inches needs roughly 0.6 cubic yards, at 10 inches about 0.5 cubic yards. Round up for settling.
Best for new vegetable and annual bedsTopping off an existing bed
After a season, beds typically drop 2 to 4 inches from settling and organic breakdown. A 2 to 4 inch top layer of fresh raised bed soil or compost restores volume and nutrients without a full teardown. This is the standard annual maintenance move rather than replacing the whole bed.
Best for annual bed maintenanceRooftop, deck, and balcony beds
Blended raised bed soil is lighter than straight topsoil, which helps with structural load limits on decks and rooftops. It is still much heavier than true soilless potting mix, so where weight caps are strict a peat and perlite mix is the safer call instead.
Best for weight-conscious elevated bedsLarge vegetable plots and community gardens
Bulk delivery by the cubic yard or ton is markedly cheaper than bagged soil once a project passes about 2 cubic yards. Multiple beds across a plot can be filled from one delivery, though truck access on narrow lots or soft lawns needs checking first.

How the blend is built and why straight compost or topsoil both fail
Raised bed soil exists because neither of its two main ingredients works alone. Plain topsoil is heavier, compacts easily, drains poorly on its own, and often carries weed seed since it is unblended native soil. Straight compost is nutrient rich but too light and too fast to break down, and using it alone leads to rapid settling and an unstable structure for roots. The fix is a blend, commonly 50 percent topsoil, 30 percent compost, 20 percent aeration material such as perlite, sand, or aged bark, or a 40/40/20 split for a slightly richer mix. The topsoil provides body and mineral content, the compost supplies organic matter and nutrients, and the aeration fraction keeps the profile loose so roots and water move freely. This is a different formula than general garden soil, which is built for in-ground amending rather than the confined, well-drained conditions inside a raised frame. A properly blended mix resists heavy compaction and lets surface water drain within about a minute rather than pooling.
How to fill a raised bed properly
Start with the bed's internal dimensions and target depth, 8 to 12 inches for most vegetables, 18 to 24 inches for root crops or beds sitting over poor draining ground. Multiply length by width by depth in feet and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For beds deeper than about 12 inches, do not fill the entire depth with premium raised bed soil, it gets expensive fast. Instead, use a cheaper base layer, plain topsoil, aged wood, or straw, in the bottom half, then finish the top 10 to 12 inches with the blended mix where roots concentrate. Fill in stages, watering lightly as you go to help the material settle naturally, and leave the surface slightly proud of the rim to account for the 2 to 4 inches of settling expected in the first season. Avoid walking or kneeling on the finished bed, compaction from foot traffic undoes the aeration built into the blend.
How It Compares
Compared with topsoil. Plain topsoil is unblended native soil, heavier, more prone to weed seed, and lacking the compost and aeration that keep a raised bed loose and well-drained. Raised bed soil is topsoil pre-blended specifically to fix those weaknesses, so it performs better as a standalone fill even though topsoil alone works fine as a cheaper base layer underneath.
Compared with garden soil. Garden soil is formulated for amending existing in-ground beds, not for the enclosed, fast-draining conditions of a raised frame. Used alone in a raised bed it holds more moisture and compacts more than a purpose-built raised bed mix, making it a better fit for in-ground projects than for a new raised bed fill.
Ordering and Coverage
How much do I need. Measure the bed's length, width, and target depth in feet, multiply them together, then divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. A 4x8 ft bed at 12 inches needs about 1.2 cubic yards, the same bed at 10 inches needs about 1 cubic yard. A 4x4 ft bed needs roughly half that. Add 15 to 20 percent extra to cover first season settling, and use coverage figures, 324 sq ft per yard at 1 inch depth, to check top off quantities in future years.
How it is sold and delivered. Raised bed soil is sold in bulk by the cubic yard, with weight running roughly 0.9 to 1.2 tons per yard depending on moisture and compost content. Bulk delivery is dumped on site rather than bagged, which is far more cost effective once a project exceeds about 2 cubic yards. Confirm truck access to the delivery spot, especially on narrow lots or soft lawns, before scheduling.
